To secure health systems serving 2.8 million American Indians and Alaska Natives, IHS needed more than cybersecurity support – it needed a modern, integrated and forward-looking digital defense.
The Challenge
The Indian Health Service (IHS) provides healthcare to 574 federally recognized tribes across 37 states – many in remote or underserved areas. That mission depends on secure, resilient and compliant information systems. But like many legacy federal systems, IHS’s cybersecurity infrastructure faced growing demands: increasing cyber threats, evolving federal standards, limited resources and complex stakeholder coordination.
IHS needed a partner to transform its cybersecurity operations – not just to maintain compliance, but to strengthen performance, reduce risk, and enable digital continuity in support of public health.
Our Solution
RELI Group provides full-spectrum cybersecurity services to IHS, anchored by a digitally driven, risk-based approach. We manage cybersecurity architecture, incident response, compliance and engineering across thousands of endpoints and systems, helping IHS protect sensitive health data while advancing its mission.
RELI’s team redesigned the Security Operations Center, built out a cloud-native Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system using Splunk, and integrated threat intelligence feeds for real-time detection and response. Our specialists use behavior analytics, automation, and proactive monitoring to identify threats before they impact patient care or operations.
We also lead digital modernization efforts across key areas – from implementing scalable dashboards and forensic tools, to supporting the adoption of Agile methodologies and continuous diagnostics and mitigation strategies. RELI’s governance, risk and compliance support ensures alignment with evolving standards like FISMA, HIPAA, NIST RMF and M-21-31.
Every element of our work is built on transparency, performance metrics and continuous improvement – delivering value while enabling secure healthcare delivery at scale.
Real Impact
RELI’s support has helped IHS move from reactive security to proactive resilience. By modernizing the agency’s cybersecurity architecture, we’ve reduced risk exposure, strengthened audit readiness, and ensured compliance across dozens of federal mandates.
Most importantly, these efforts safeguard healthcare access for more than 2.8 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. With real-time monitoring, digital forensics and continuous system hardening, IHS is better equipped to serve its communities with uninterrupted care and data-driven decision-making.
Without this work, a single system failure or breach could compromise patient privacy, disrupt care or erode trust. With RELI’s digital transformation, IHS continues to deliver on its mission – securely, efficiently and with confidence.
